چکیده

The mean value of the normalized current helicity αp = B · (∇×B)/B 2 in solar active regions is on the order of 10 m, negative in the northern hemisphere, positive in the southern hemisphere. Observations indicate that this helicity has a subsurface origin. Possible mechanisms leading to a twist of this amplitude in magnetic flux tubes include the solar dynamo, convective buffeting of rising flux tubes, and the accretion of weak external poloidal flux by a rising toroidal flux tube. After briefly reviewing the observational and theoretical constraints on the origin of helicity, we present a recently developed detailed model for poloidal flux accretion.

Emergence of a Helical Flux Rope under an Active Region Prominence

Continuous observations were obtained of active region 10953 with the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) on board the Hinode satellite during 2007 April 28 to May 9. A prominence was located over the polarity inversion line (PIL) in the south-east of the main sunspot. These observations provided us with a time series of vector magnetic fields on the photosphere under the prominence. We found four fe...

Current Helicity and Twist as Two Indicators of The Mirror Asymmetry of Solar Magnetic Fields

A comparison between the two tracers of magnetic field mirror asymmetry in solar active regions, twist and current helicity, is presented. It is shown that for individual active regions these tracers do not possess visible similarity while averaging by time over the solar cycle, or by latitude, reveals similarities in their behaviour. The main property of the dataset is anti-symmetry over the s...

On the Self-similarity of Unstable Magnetic Discontinuities in Solar Active Regions

We investigate the statistical properties of possible magnetic discontinuities in two solar active regions over the course of several hours. We use linear force-free extrapolations to calculate the three-dimensional magnetic structure in the active regions. Magnetic discontinuities are identified using various selection criteria. Independently of the selection criterion, we identify large numbe...

Magnetic helicity and flux tube dynamics in the solar convection zone: Comparisons between observation and theory

[1] Magnetic helicity, a conserved topological parameter in ideal MHD systems, conditions close to which are realized in the solar plasma, is intimately connected to the creation and subsequent dynamics of magnetic flux tubes in the solar interior. It can therefore be used as a tool to probe such dynamics. In this paper we show how photospheric observations of magnetic helicity of isolated magn...

On the Force-Freeness of Photospheric Magnetic Fields in Solar Active Regions: The Current Density Method

We introduce and apply a method to investigate the force-free character of the photospheric magnetic fields in solar active regions. The vertical current density, inferred from vector magnetograms, is decomposed into a helical (assumed field-aligned) component, and a component perpendicular to the magnetic field. Contrary to the classical method of calculating the integrated Lorentz forces, the...
